Garden sheds have many uses in our lives and how you use it will not only depend on the size, shape and type, but also on your personal preferences. Some people opt to use garden sheds to store traditional tools, and others use them to create a workshop.
Sheds provide an innovative way to get rid of excess clutter in the home and forego the need to spend money on a storage unit. In fact, most people can’t imagine their lives without a garden shed present in their yards. They allow for safe storage of items that are sentimental or seasonal, but you don’t need to have around the home year-round.
If you are a sworn do-it-yourselfer, you can even get the necessary supplies to build your own shed to fit your needs better with garden shed plans. With that being said, below are a couple of ideas for your shed.
Safe Storage For Gardening Equipment
Storing garden equipment doesn’t require a large shed, in fact, a small gable or lean-to shed is more than enough space. The important thing to focus on with these sheds is their location. They should be close to your garden area to allow quick access.
Don’t forget to focus a bit on organizing your shed as well. Hooks and shelves are fairly simple to add, and allow you to keep your things organized and within reach.
Personalized Workshop
Most people that don’t have enough space in their homes for a studio or workshop generally end up building a larger sized barn shed. However, the shed will need to be made more functional with the addition of windows to let in light and/or skylights for added natural lighting. Don’t forget the importance of having a well-ventilated space and if necessary, add a workbench.
Storage Unit
If you have a lot of things you can’t bear to put away into storage or just don’t want to sell at a garage sale, a garden shed is the perfect storage unit. It not only costs less than traditional storage, but all of your items can be stored away and within reach. Of course, depending on your location, make sure your shed is able to stand against the elements. You wouldn’t want your things getting soaked or the roof to cave-in.
Garden Shed Styles
A large sized garden shed can be adequate storage for a vehicle, motorcycle or other large equipment. These sheds are usually not readily available, but they can be built easily using professional blueprints or an easy-to-assemble kit. You also have the freedom to choose building materials such as wood, metal or plastic.
As a quick note, if your shed is going to be vehicle storage, you need to ensure that it is built in leveled ground. You wouldn’t want your shed to get flooded if it rains hard and long. Install a curved iron roof or a plastic coated roof for additional safety.
Taking Care Of Your Shed
Lastly, make sure you keep a close eye on your shed. The structure should always be strong and constantly inspect for things like termite damage, breaks, cracks or chips. Address any problems immediately to ensure they don’t escalate. Keep in mind if you’re ever looking to sell, a well-kept shed can add significant value to your home.
